The Art of Elicitation

The Art of Elicitation

Elicitation involves extracting information without directly asking for it, a core skill in pretexting:

Conversational Techniques:

Assumed Knowledge: Presenting partial information as if fully informed, encouraging victims to fill in gaps. "I'm calling about the server issue in Building 2" prompts clarification that reveals actual information.

Deliberate False Statements: Making incorrect claims that victims feel compelled to correct. "Since you're using the old password system..." often prompts revelation of current systems.

Flattery and Ego Appeals: Complimenting expertise while asking for help. "You're the expert on this system—can you help me understand..." makes victims eager to demonstrate knowledge.

Mutual Disclosure: Sharing false "confidential" information to encourage reciprocal sharing. This exploits the human tendency toward conversational balance.
