User Interface and Usability

ZAP's interface prioritizes functionality over aesthetics, presenting comprehensive information across multiple tabs and panels. New users often find the interface overwhelming initially, but the logical organization becomes intuitive with experience. The Sites tree provides clear visualization of application structure, while dedicated tabs for different functions (History, Active Scan, Alerts) maintain organized workflows. Recent UI improvements have modernized the appearance while maintaining familiar layouts for existing users.

Burp Suite's interface feels more polished and modern, with a cleaner design that many users prefer. The target site map, proxy history, and scanner results integrate smoothly. However, some advanced features hide behind multiple menu levels, requiring memorization of locations. The Burp Suite Community edition interface constantly reminds users of disabled features, which can be frustrating when learning the tool.

Both tools support keyboard shortcuts, customizable layouts, and workspace saving. ZAP's HUD (Heads Up Display) provides a unique in-browser interface that some testers prefer for interactive testing. Burp Suite's Inspector provides excellent request/response analysis with automatic format detection. Personal preference often drives interface choices, but both tools provide effective workflows once mastered.
